The bit where i talk about why i made the album
I love writing. It’s about the only hobby that’s followed me from childhood. I love battling with metaphors and rhythm for hours until they fall into place and paint pictures. I love the struggle, I love the release and I love the pieces that come out of it. It feels important that the words can be shared and come alive in the minds of other people. Otherwise, they just die.
But I struggle finding places for them to go because I care too much to put them just anywhere. They aren’t paintings I can frame in gold and hang up on the finest walls, and while I know that words can be read, it would be wrong to put them all in writing because so many of them were written to be read aloud. So much of their colour is in the rhythm, and so much of the catharsis in the performance. I thought about taking them to poetry slams but realised the slam culture doesn’t really align with what I love about poetry and storytelling. It feels like a place where the art is less important than the person behind it, and that’s no place for art to find a home.
Writing for music felt like a good idea - since so many people listen with headphones, their interactions with it could be personal. Some people won’t feel any connection to the music on this album, it won’t make them feel anything and that’s okay. It can exist for those who want to listen and if it makes someone feel something that’s brilliant. I wanted this album to be a true exhibition of all that I love about writing – that way even if it doesn’t live for long, somebody loved it.
It wasn’t written to fit a certain genre or please a certain crowd - It is a result of soul driven experimentation and creative labour. All the songs were written, produced and recorded in a small bedroom in Brighton by two people who discovered that they loved making music together, and wanted to have a go at making an album.
We had a really nice time :)
